about me

My brain is a conglomerate of doodles, flowers, pretty things and a lot of sass as the proverbial glue. To sum me up in true Unity Stamp Company fashion: “I’m Classy, but I cuss a little!”

For the past 20 years, I have resided in the good ol’ US of A. I currently live in Greenville, South Carolina with my husband, and three kids (ages 9,5 and 3). I was born and raised in South Africa and immigrated when I turned 20. I work as a radiographer at two local hospitals and truly enjoy helping others. My husband, Matt, bless his soul, is the one who pushed me headfirst into discovering this whole beautiful, card making wonderland.

My creative brain was sparked by “Adult Coloring” in 2016. I was going through a really rough time in my life and this really calmed me. I have never taken an Art class in my entire life. In school I excelled in subjects like math, science and biology, DEFINITELY not art. I started doodling and tangling, and totally immersed myself in Zentangle. I would doodle, color and make cards for my friends on their birthdays. My creative goal for 2016 was to make all my friends and coworkers cards to celebrate special occasions. The big “jump in the water, no clothes, no shoes, no hat” moment to create a higher quality card and using mixed media techniques for card making, was when my husband bought me a Cricut Explore Air 2 for Mother’s Day in 2017.  I knew I was screwed!

Suddenly, I had alerts on my phone for every famous card making Youtuber and developed a quiet crush on Tim Holtz!  Buying stamps that cost over $20 could be justified with all the cards I could make from that one stamp. Learning about card sizes, colors, mediums, what type of paper to use… you know how thrilling this process is! Oh, and the dies and stamps and brushes….ooohhh!!!

Well, Matt quickly realized that this hobby is a money pit and decided to create a Facebook page with a shop feature. That is how CharCards was born. I have since taken down the store and only use the page for my “look what I made” posts. My few followers request custom cards and I am over the moon when they push my creativity outside my comfort zone.

My city of Greenville is quite active in promoting small businesses and artists and host many festivals, fairs, markets and shows. Last year, I participated in 7 markets and enjoyed them all, even if I barely made the booth fee. I love making these cards and rubbing shoulders with other artists who are trying to overcome their own personal issues and make a buck as a bonus.

My style is not really defined as I can’t always stick with my original idea in me head. The end product always comes as a surprise to me as it never looks like what I intended making! My Cricut is quiet these days but I sometimes use my Brother Scan n Cut as an easy fussy cutting shortcut.

I hope you enjoy my blog and check out my Facebook and Instagram pages (links below).

Also, I am turning 40 this year.  How did this happen???
